President Barack Obama defended his record $3.6 trillion budget and the long-term deficits it will create as he urged Americans to be patient with what he said will be a slow road to economic recovery.

While Obama’s budget blueprint estimates this year’s deficit at $1.75 trillion, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported last week that the deficit will reach $1.85 trillion this year and remain higher than Obama’s projections over the next several years.

The president said the dollar is “extraordinarily strong” because investors are confident in the ability of the U.S. to lead a worldwide recovery.
