The SNB said it would purchase Swiss franc-denominated bonds issued by private-sector borrowers. The move is an effort to knock down the rising risk premium private-sector borrowers have had to pay since the collapse of Lehman Brothers last year. Rising bond yield spreads have hindered the impact of past cuts in official interest rates, the SNB said.

"Their announcement today is aimed at accomplishing two goals at the expense of their neighbors . . . protect their export sector and prevent the economy from falling into a deflation trap," said Kathy Lien, director of currency research at GFT.
